During December, many families observe traditions centered on light, reflection, community, and care. Our school aims to build awareness of these traditions in a respectful, age-appropriate way, without celebrating or prioritizing any one belief system.
Traditions that may be acknowledged include the Winter Solstice, observed in many cultures as a time of renewal and the return of light; Hanukkah, a Jewish tradition honoring perseverance and faith; Christmas, a Christian tradition focused on the birth of Jesus and values of generosity and care; Kwanzaa, a cultural observance from December 26 through January 1 that honors African heritage and shared community values; and either Bodhi Day, a Buddhist tradition emphasizing mindfulness and compassion, or Las Posadas, a Latinx Catholic tradition centered on hospitality and community.
This approach helps students understand that families may observe this season in different ways, and that all are respected.
